The store must participate
A gas station convenience store may accept SNAP only if it is an authorized SNAP retailer. Acceptance can vary by location even within a chain. Use USDA’s retailer locator or ask at checkout.
Eligible groceries versus fuel
SNAP may cover qualifying packaged or cold food and drinks sold by an authorized store, subject to federal rules and current state waivers. It cannot pay for gasoline, car supplies, cigarettes, alcohol or other nonfood goods.
Prepared food can be different
Hot food at the point of sale generally cannot be purchased with SNAP. A state Restaurant Meals Program or a temporary disaster exception can change some situations; do not assume the whole convenience-store menu qualifies.
Split the purchase
If your basket includes both eligible and ineligible items, pay for the non-SNAP items another way. The terminal determines eligible food at checkout. Ask the retailer or state agency about an unexpected decline.
