A practical checklist for an unsuccessful grocery transaction.
Start with the simple checks
A card can be declined because the available balance is too low, the PIN was entered incorrectly or the retailer is not authorized for the selected items. Check your balance through the official state EBT channel.
Separate food from nonfood
Cleaning products, pet food and medicines are generally not eligible SNAP purchases. If a transaction mixes covered and uncovered items, ask the cashier to split the payment.
Rule out a card or terminal issue
Try another checkout terminal or ask the store whether its EBT connection is working. Repeated declines at more than one authorized store may need the state card-service team.
Protect your card
Do not give a caller, social-media account or unofficial website your card number and PIN to fix an error. Contact the number on the card or the state agency.
