What the food benefit does and does not pay for.
SNAP is for eligible food
Backpacks, notebooks, pens and clothing are generally nonfood products, so SNAP cannot pay for them. The presence of an EBT logo at the retailer does not turn every item in a store into an eligible purchase.
Food for school is different
Some cold groceries and food ingredients can be eligible SNAP purchases if they meet program rules. School meal programs and Summer EBT are separate benefits with their own requirements.
Check other help
Schools, local charities or community programs may provide supplies. Ask a school counselor or district office about current local assistance rather than trying to use a SNAP card for nonfood goods.
At checkout
Pay for nonfood supplies with another accepted method. If a food item is unexpectedly rejected, ask the retailer or state EBT service for clarification.
