Supplemental Security Income provides cash to eligible older or disabled people. SNAP is a food benefit. Receiving one does not by itself determine the dollar amount from the other.
Income may count
An SSI payment generally enters the SNAP income calculation, while an eligible older or disabled household member may qualify for special medical and shelter deductions. The result depends on the whole household.
Household rules still apply
Who purchases and prepares food together can affect the SNAP household. Some older or disabled people may qualify to be a separate household under specific conditions.
Apply through the right office
SSI questions go to Social Security. SNAP applications and benefit determinations go to the state SNAP agency. Bring current award and medical-expense records when requested.
