Veterans can apply
A veteran may qualify based on household income, size and deductions. VA pension or disability payments may count as income, so gather the benefit statement when applying.
Disability rules can matter
A veteran meeting SNAP’s disability definition may qualify for special treatment of the gross-income test, eligible medical expenses and shelter deduction. The agency determines whether the person meets that definition.
Different programs, different decisions
A VA benefit does not automatically approve or deny SNAP. Wages, other household members, rent and medical costs can substantially change the net-income result.
Where to get help
Use the state SNAP agency for eligibility and application questions. A VA social worker or accredited service organization can help gather documents, but only the state agency makes the SNAP decision.
