Homelessness does not automatically prevent a SNAP application.
Tell the agency your circumstances
People without a permanent home can apply for SNAP. Ask the local agency how to receive notices, complete an interview and collect a card. A shelter, authorized representative or other reliable contact arrangement may help, subject to state practice.
Income and urgent need
If income and liquid resources are very low, ask to be screened for expedited service. Tell the office what food storage or preparation options you have; special rules can affect how benefits are used.
Shelter deduction
USDA publishes a separate homeless shelter deduction for qualifying households. The FY 2026 maximum is $198.99, changing to $205.66 in FY 2027. The agency determines whether the household may claim it.
Restaurant meals
Some states operate an optional Restaurant Meals Program for eligible people who cannot prepare or store food in the usual way. Participation is not nationwide; ask the state whether it is available.
