Working while receiving SNAP

Why employment does not automatically end SNAP eligibility.

Why employment does not automatically end SNAP eligibility.

Work is common

SNAP can help households with earnings. The key financial questions are countable household income, size and allowed expenses, alongside other program rules. A job itself is not a disqualification.

Earned income deduction

Federal rules generally deduct 20% of earned income when calculating net income. Dependent care needed for work may also be deductible. A raise can lower your benefit, but the change is not necessarily a dollar-for-dollar reduction.

Report changes correctly

States set reporting rules and deadlines. Keep pay records and follow the instructions in your notice when hours or pay change. If work is seasonal or irregular, ask how the agency estimates monthly earnings.

Work requirements are separate

Some adults face general work rules and an additional time-limit rule. Exceptions, waivers and recent law changes can matter. Ask your agency which rules apply to your own household.
