Start with the notice
The written notice should tell you why the application was denied. A missing document, unanswered interview request and financial ineligibility call for different responses. Note the date and appeal deadline.
Ask for your calculation
If income or household size appears wrong, request an explanation and provide records that correct it. If a deduction was omitted, submit proof of the expense. Keep copies and the date you sent them.
Fair hearing rights
Applicants generally have a right to ask for a fair hearing about an adverse decision. The notice should explain the request process and deadline. A local legal aid office may be able to help.
A new application
Changed circumstances may support a new application. Ask the agency whether to appeal, submit missing information, reapply, or do more than one of those steps; timing affects benefits.
