Foods for the household
SNAP generally covers many staple foods: fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy, breads, cereals, snack foods and nonalcoholic beverages. Seeds and plants that produce food for the household can also be eligible.
Common exclusions
Alcohol, tobacco, vitamins and medicines, hot foods at the point of sale, and nonfood items such as cleaning supplies and pet food are generally excluded. A product’s store aisle is not the legal test.
Look at the label
Items with a Nutrition Facts label are often eligible food; products with Supplement Facts usually are not. Some special restaurant programs and local situations have separate rules.
At checkout
The EBT system separates eligible from ineligible items. You can pay for the rest with another method. If a clearly eligible item is rejected, ask the retailer or your state EBT service for help.
